Capital Training
Capital Training was set up seven years ago. We started with 3, and now run 132 Construction occupational NVQs, levels 1 to 4. We've been highly recommended through the LSC, through the Train to Gain programmes we deliver, and by our Awarding Body. We're developing new NVQs all the time.
"Learning Assistant came across as the most flexible, easiest to use e-portfolio system. I always tell my team to 'keep it simple'. If it's simple, it's usable. If you keep it simple, everybody enjoys it."
Brandon Loxton, Director, Capital Training
Why did you consider using an
e-portfolio system?
We decided to look at e-portfolios about two years ago, to see what the benefits were for Learners and Assessors. We realised that IT was the way forward. There has been a massive increase in the quality of provision, and the Awarding Body is very impressed with what we deliver. Our attainment records have improved from 75% to 98%. The Assessors find it easier to use, and it's eliminated the need for paperwork. Life is becoming easier for everybody. We are forward thinking, and want to be market leaders.
Why did you choose Learning Assistant?
Originally, we looked at three providers. Learning Assistant came across as the most flexible, easiest to use e-portfolio system. I always tell my team to "keep it simple". If it's simple, it's usable. If you keep it simple, everybody enjoys it. It gives 24/7 access to the Learner, Assessor and IV. The reporting module to the employer is fantastic. It charts where everybody is, and progression is easily monitored. You don't need to run around looking for paper portfolios, it's all at the PC.
How has using Learning Assistant changed your business?
Quite dramatically. Two years ago there were only 5 employees, now there are 38, with a recruitment process in place for another 15. The reason is a 60-70% increase in workload. It's easier to upload documentation and evidence. It's a quicker system which improves quality of work. The Assessor is theoretically always in the field with the Learner. We use Work Based Recorders and rely heavily on video evidence, which the Awarding Body thinks is phenomenal. The benefits have been overwhelming, and there's now less need for administration.
Has Learning Assistant altered your bottom line?
Absolutely. It's made a huge benefit to the bottom line, because productivity has increased 60-70%. Overheads are reduced. Assessors are earning more than they've ever earned before. Profitability has increased substantially. Performance-wise I can't ask for more from my team. The quality of work is improving, and the number of Learners is increasing.
