Like all good engines, our QCF feature consists of a variety of individual parts that work together to create the QCF courses within City & Guilds Learning Assistant. These include: Unit Cloud, Builder, Rules of Combination Editor, Wizard and Personal Learning Record. Each feature of QCF Engine is designed to give you complete control over the course creation process and give each learner a highly-personalised learning experience.
For each course, there will be an overall structure and a set of rules of combination that determine which Units can be combined to gain the credits required for an award. This allows you to design different courses for each learner, depending on the type and level of qualification they require, while also recognising the learner's previous achievements.

The QCF Engine allows you to access Units via the "QCF Cloud" - a repository of all the Units you require to create your learner's courses. All you need to create a QCF course is the appropriate Qualification Reference Number. By entering this into the QCF Builder tool, the course structure is automatically downloaded from the new Unit Cloud along with all the relevant Units and Learner Outcomes.
Within Builder you will be able to review all relevant course Units, including information such as: the description, number of credits, guided learning hours and level. In addition to downloading the course structure, you also receive the Rules of Combination for each course, where each of the properties can be altered to allow detailed customisation of the course structure.
In keeping with the purpose of the QCF initiative, QCF Engine allows you to combine the new QCF Units with the Learner's prior qualifications. This is achieved by accessing a PLR (Personal Learning Record) for each learner. This information is displayed within the Wizard tool, where you (and your learner) can choose which of the optional Units they want to complete in order to achieve the required credits for the award.
The Wizard calculates all the credits available for the selected Units and compares this with the minimum required for the award. At a glance, the Wizard allows you to see exactly which combination of Units is required to complete the learner's course, ensuring they are now QCF Ready.
